Eyes are windows to the brain, which enables us to see, to learn, to live and appreciate the wonders and beauty of the nature. In spite of knowing its importance, we usually are not able to take proper care of it. It has been observed that our country has the maximum number of blind people in the world of which avoidable blindness and vision impairment contribute a significant amount. Around 11 million children in India are blind or visually impaired merely from the lack of an eye examination and appropriate pair of glasses. Recognizing such situations, it is very important for us to increase the manpower of eye health care.

YAIMA COLLEGE OF OPTOMETRY
There are significant challenges for eye healthcare with ever increasing avoidable blindness and visual impairment. These mainly include insufficient number of competent healthcare professionals at the primary as well as at tertiary levels, non-rationalization of available resources and the inability to afford treatment.
India currently has around 12 millions blind people against 39 millions globally which makes India home to one third of the world’s blind population. Out of this population 80% of blindness can be prevented if better eye care services could be provided. This trend holds true for every part of the country including the Northeastern side including Manipur where the geographical terrain is different from rest of the country too.
Addressing the pressing need to cope with such challenges, the “Yaima College of Optometry under the guidance of Yaima Mission for Vision as well as of Yaima Eye Hospital & Research Centre Pvt. Ltd. is offering a four year professional degree in optometry. The college is located at Khagempalli Pankha, Mayai Lambi Road, Imphal West, Manipur-795001.

To prevent the ever growing burden of avoidable blindness through proper management of treatable blindness at the best level, as well as rehabilitation for the impaired and also to enhance in providing new vista in delivery of eye care through continuing medical education.
World Council of Optometry (WCO) has defined optometrists as a health care profession that is autonomous, educated and regulated (licensed/registered). Optometrists are the primary health care practitioners of the eye and visual system who provide comprehensive eye and vision care including refraction and dispensing. detection/diagnosis and management of disease in the eye and the rehabilitation of conditions of the visual system.
As primary eye care practitioners, optometrists have a vital role in detecting potentially serious eye diseases such as cataract, glaucoma and age-related maculopathy, and general health conditions such as hypertension and diabetes.
The Bachelor Degree of Optometry course is affiliated to Manipur University, Canchipur, Imphal, Manipur. The course is being conducted as per the guidance and guidelines of the affiliating University. The existing as well as revised provisions in the University Act, Statutes, Ordinances, rules and other instructions provided from time to time, shall be binding to all the students.
Manipur University was established on 5th June, 1980 under the Manipur University Act. 1980 (Manipur Act 8 of 1980), as a teaching cum-affiliating university at Imphal with territorial jurisdiction over the whole of the state of Manipur. It was converted into a central university on 13th of October 2005. The Manipur University Act No 54 of 2005 received the assent of the President on 28th of December 2005.

COURSES WE OFFER
Bachelor of Optometry : 3+1 Years (1 year of internship) or 8 (6+2) semesters.
Semesters : An academic year consist of two semesters
Odd Semester: August/January
Even Semester: February/ July
Medium of Instruction : English shall be the medium of instruction for all the subjects of study and for examination of the course
The candidate must have obtained a 60% marks taken together in English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology / Mathematics in the higher secondary examination that is equivalent to 10+2. Eligibility marks may be relaxed by 5% % to candidates belonging to SC / ST / OBC
(Every candidate shall apply in prescribed form duly obtained from concerned authority on payment of Rs.1000 (One Thousand only).
Duly completed application form is to be submitted along with the required documents to the office of Yaima College of Optometry, Khagempalli Pankha, Huidrom Leikai, Imphal 795001, Manipur during office hours.
Application must be filled up by the candidate in his/her own handwriting and shall be accompanied by all necessary certificates, documents and fees as may be prescribed in the prospectus/advertisement.
Incomplete application forms in any respect shall be rejected and no communication in this regard shall be entertained. The Authority/ Institute shall not be responsible for any delay in the receipt or loss of application in postal transit and no correspondence in this regard shall be entertained. Any document/certificate found to be false or fabricated at any stage shall make the application liable to rejection and admission if given on basis of such documents/certificates shall be liable to be cancelled without any refund of any fee etc. paid in this regard and criminal proceedings shall be drawn against such candidate)
The working hours of college are from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. However during the final year as the students are posted in different specialty clinics and out patient procedures, the timing will depend on the clinical schedule. Punctuality and attendace will be considered for evaluations.
FACILITIES & OPPORTUNITIES
Canteen
The college provides a healthy environment in the canteen and make sure that quality food is served at reasonable price helps the student refresh themselves with snacks during short break.
Hostel
Hostel will be provided. As the rooms are limited, preference will be given to female candidates and candidates from other districts or states.
LIBRARY
Students have access to Library where they can choose different types of books by different authors and study in a quite and peaceful environments.
Anti Ragging
The institute maintains strict anti-ragging guidelines and all students are required to avoid such activities. Students violating the same are liable to disciplinary action including expulsion from the institute and also lodging criminal case against the student ath the police station as per the directive from the honorable Supreme Court of India.
Beyond Classroom - Eyes Camp & Workshop
To provide students that extra dimension, which no classroom can give, and also to foster a sense of team spirit, YCO participated in inter college festivals, competitions held by the students are allowed to attend a number of eye camps organised by the college in different areas of the state.

Yaima College of Optometry provides information and advices, guides and support for our students. The cell trains students to develop good communication skills, technical skills, time and stress management to face campus interview with confidence.
